Forget simple chatbots. The real revolution this year is multi-modal, autonomous agents making real business decisions and controlling processes end-to-end.

While 2023 and 2024 were the years of generative text models and last year we saw the orchestration of those models, 2026 ushers in a new era. Autonomous AI agents no longer work reactively to prompts, but proactively. They are given a goal, define the necessary intermediate steps themselves, use external tools, fix their own errors, and deliver the final result.

From Copilot to Autopilot

The paradigm shift from copilot (supporting human input) to autopilot (taking over processes completely) is the most important technological shift for mid-market companies. An autonomous finance agent today, for example, can read unstructured invoices from emails, make reconciliations in the ERP system, request missing data from suppliers via email, and prepare the final booking for approval. And all this in parallel for thousands of transactions.

Multi-modality as the key

Current models not only "see" and "hear", they interact with the same computer interfaces as humans. This "computer use" paradigm means that companies no longer have to expensively connect their legacy software via APIs. The agent simply controls the existing system through the user interface, just like a human employee.

The consequence for companies

Companies running "boring businesses" - those with real cash flows, high manual effort, and established but inefficient structures - now have the most massive lever. The integration of autonomous agents will not lead to incremental 5% improvements here, but to entirely new cost structures and margins.
